8bit Dreamscape on view in South Lake Union

In the middle of October, fresh off a spectacular camping adventure in the red canyons of Utah, I was asked to create and install a display for one of the purpose-built windows that dot the Amazon campus. It was sort of a follow-up to my residency at the Spheres a year ago. But with a two-week turnaround. Naturally.

Since one of my superpowers is making lots of work for myself, I decided to cover the entire vitrine in pattern, which amounted to screenprinting approximately three hundred square feet of paper in three passes of ink. Before my trip I’d been working on some tests of new patterns, and I have the tendency to linger too long in the testing phase. This project was a welcome prompt to just pick a pattern, make it into an actual finished thing, and parade it about in public.

I made two colorways of the same pattern and divided the space unequally between them, blending them together at the intersection in a pixelated manner. I was trying to wring some more movement out of an inherently static situation. A lack of lighting in the vitrine turned out to be a blessing, as my ever-handy Best Boy suggested we install some theatrical lights he happened to have hanging around, and together we came up with a dynamic lighting sequence that plays off the printed colors, scrambling your perception of them.

The window installation is located at 535 Terry Avenue North (just south of Mercer), conveniently at a trolley stop. 8bit Dreamscape will be up (and lit 24/7) through the end of February 2025.
